 How gabapentin works is by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain which prevents seizures that are caused by an excessive amount of electrical activity.  What it does is mimic the activity of GABA a neurotransmitter which has the main job of calming nerve activity in the brain. It is very important to note that it is not approved by the FDA for veterinary use. It is also widely used in humans as an alternative to opiates and can be addictive. 

Gabapentin is generally not used on its own, however, the most common application is for its use in treating chronic pain in dogs.
