Hookworms are an extremely common intestinal parasite that is found in dogs.

The name says it all with hookworms, once inside the dog's body they physically hook themselves inside the digestive system of the dog. Once attached to the dog's digestive tract they leech off the intestinal lining feeding of blood vessels.

Hookworms are parasitic invaders that flourish in the intestine, and digestive tract of canines. Almost every single dog will have hookworms at at least some point in their lifetime, it most commonly will occur when the dog is young as a puppy. It is crucial to detect, and treat these parasites as soon as possible. 

Hookworms, like whipworms and other parasites, are transmitted through eggs which most often are in the feces of dogs, and are naked to the human eye. Dogs become infected when the inspect other dogs feces who are infected by licking, eating or even sniffing the infected feces. Hookworms can also be spread through contaminated drinking water and they can also be transmitted through contaminated soil. It is also common for dogs to be infected with hookworms from their mother. This is usually caused by the mother being infected with larvae who are then passed by either nursing or just before birth.

• Orally

• Contact with the dog's skin

• Just before birth

• Nursing while a puppy
